The National Football League (NFL) has witnessed countless historic moments and unforgettable games. In this edition of “This Week in NFL History,” we journey back 65 years to 1958 when the Baltimore Colts embarked on their remarkable journey to the NFL championship. This path would culminate in what has since been immortalized as the “Greatest Game Ever Played.” In the midst of this storied season, it was not just the offensive stars who shone brightly but also a defensive powerhouse led by the legendary Gino Marchetti.
The Beginning of a Championship Run
On September 28, 1958, the Baltimore Colts, the NFL’s standout team that year, faced off against the reigning champions, the Detroit Lions, at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. This pivotal game marked the start of the Colts’ incredible season. A 28-15 victory over the Lions set the stage for an unforgettable journey in NFL history.
While future Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas and the Colts’ offensive stars rightfully claimed their share of the spotlight, the team’s defensive line, led by Gino Marchetti, served as the backbone of the squad. This formidable defense would be crucial in the Colts’ path to glory.
Gino Marchetti: More Than Just a Defensive End
Gino Marchetti, who wore the iconic No. 89 jersey, was a force to be reckoned with on the football field. He embodied the essence of a defensive end in the purest sense. Marchetti’s play transcended the position; he was the position. Opposing offenses quickly learned that running at him, by him, or around him was futile.
His unique blend of size, strength, and speed set Gino Marchetti apart. He wasn’t just an immovable wall on the line; he possessed the agility and quickness to chase down runners attempting to escape his clutches. In Marchetti’s own words, he played the game with an unrelenting intensity, and this relentless tempo was a permanent part of his arsenal.
Marchetti was the heart and soul of a defense that boasted its fair share of characters, a group that would create moments of both hilarity and high drama. The Colts’ locker room was a colourful place, and Gino Marchetti stood out as the most colourful.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
The pinnacle of the 1958 season was the NFL Championship Game, which has since become legendary as the “Greatest Game Ever Played.” On December 28, 1958, the Baltimore Colts faced the New York Giants in a battle that would capture the hearts of football fans nationwide. This championship clash decided in sudden-death overtime, remains one of the most iconic moments in NFL history.
The Legacy Lives On
Although the Baltimore Colts eventually relocated to Indianapolis in 1984 to become the Indianapolis Colts, the memories of their storied past still resonate. In the 2023 NFL season, the Colts returned to Baltimore for the 11th time, including postseason matchups, to face the Ravens. This reunion serves as a reminder of the Colts franchise’s rich history and enduring legacy.
The Baltimore Colts of 1958 were a team for the ages, and their journey to the NFL championship, culminating in the “Greatest Game Ever Played,” remains a cherished chapter in NFL lore. At the heart of this iconic team was Gino Marchetti, a defensive end who redefined the position and left an indelible mark on the football game. The “Charm’tastic Mile” of Baltimore will honor the 65th Anniversary (1958-2023) of the Colts NFL Championship win (23-17) vs the NY Giants. The irony that the 65th Anniversary will occur in 2023 with the Colts scoring 23-points in victory makes it that much-more memorable!
