During our holiday to Washington DC visiting friends, we drove out to Philadelphia for the day, and there is not a shortage of things to do in the city. Be it run the Rocky steps, indulge in a Philly cheesesteak, get your photograph at the Liberty Bell – you’ll be kept busy for sure!
To help you, I’ve put together what I feel are the most essential experiences to be had in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’.
Exploring Philadelphia
Take a photo in front of the Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell doesn’t make a sound, but the inscription on the cracked but mighty bell rings loud and clear: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” It is free to visit year-round with no tickets required.
Run the ‘Rocky Steps’ and get a picture with the Rocky Statue
This place is iconic, whether you’re a Rocky fan or not. You don’t have to run the steps – my husband did – but make sure you go to the top as you’ll see an incredible view of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the city skyline. Then head to the bottom of the stairs and snap a photo with the bronze statue of Rocky, originally created for Rocky III – just like we did! Just an FYI, there are people at the bottom who will want to take the photo for you, they will expect a tip in exchange!
Indulge in an authentic Philly cheesesteak
Without a doubt, the Philly cheesesteak is the city’s most famous dish. If you don’t know what one is, it is a sandwich that consists of chopped (or thinly sliced) steak and a choice of cheeses and/or fried onions on a hoagie roll. You don’t ask for a cheesesteak though, you need just two words only – cheese selection (provolone, American or Whiz – I’d go Whiz!) and “wit” or “without” onions.
Explore dozens of vendors at Reading Terminal Market
Set beneath the former train terminal, the 125-year-old Reading Terminal Market is both a tourist destination and a source for fresh produce, seafood, meats and cheese for locals. There is plenty of open seating around, and dozens of restaurants to explore such as Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine and acclaimed DiNic’s hot roast pork sandwiches.
What else is there to explore?
As I said earlier, we were only in Philly for a couple of hours so didn’t get to see everything. There is so much more to do than what I just listed so if you have time, be sure to check out these places:
- Visit the awesome museums on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway
- Take in an epic view of City Hall (and then go on a tour inside!)
- Explore Philly’s revitalised waterfront
- Admire the quiet beauty of Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River
- Visit the world famous LOVE sculpture
- Visit the birthplace of the United States, the Independence Hall
