This date in NFL History…August 31. The year is 1997 and Eddie George has run for 216 yards on 35 carries and scored a touchdown, to help the former Houston Oilers to beat the Oakland Raiders 24-21 in overtime.
The Oilers had relocated from Houston to Tennessee that year and this was not only their season opener but the first time in which they would play a game at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. They played here for one season before moving in 1998 to play at the Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville. For those two years the team were known as the Oilers but changed their name to become the Tennessee Titans in 1999.
Eddie George, now retired, was a running back in the National Football League for nine seasons. He played college football for Ohio State University and won the Heisman Trophy in 1995.
